How do sports betting odds work?

In odds-based betting, the possible return is tied to the quoted price. FDJ UNITED explains that less likely outcomes generally correspond to greater potential winnings and greater risk. Odds are therefore both a payout mechanism and a market signal.

Odds are not a guarantee

A quoted price does not make an outcome likely or certain. Different operators can quote different prices, and the bookmaker margin means displayed odds are not a pure probability forecast.

Decimal oddsStakeGross return if successfulSimple implied probability
1.50101566.7%
2.00102050.0%
4.00104025.0%

Calculated as stake × decimal odds; simple implied probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds. This ignores bookmaker margin across all outcomes.

What “market depth” means

Market depth is the number and variety of outcomes available for an event. FDJ UNITED’s 2024 document reported extensive online fixed-odds inventory across its sportsbook portfolio, including Unibet, but those portfolio figures should be treated as dated group-level context rather than a fixed current promise for every Unibet jurisdiction.
